The 60-Hour Martyrdom
I was in work the other day, chatting to a guy who's one level above me, and around 20 years my senior. I was moaning talking about my kids and how I try to make time for them despite having a stressful, busy job. His reply was something like:
I wouldn't worry about it too much. I missed everything when my kids were growing up and they turned out fine. I didn't have time for it all with work. That was my wife's job.
What he didn't realise was that I wasn't moaning about having to attend these things for my kids so I could focus on work. No. He read the room allllll wrong - I was saying the complete opposite.
Work shouldn't get in the way of spending quality time with your family.
I can't tell you how much these corporate shills piss me off. Working a 60-hour week isn't a badge of honour. It just shows you're a prick who for some reason prioritises their work over their family.
Outside of the 4 walls of$company, no-one gives a fuck about how arbitrarily important you are. You're just another dude on the street. So don't give up your life for a company that doesn't give a toss about you. You're replaceable. And when you retire, you will be replaced.
Work your contracted hours, do a good job, then leave work at work and focus on what's important. Because I guarantee your boss won't be there holding your hand on your deathbed. But your kids probably will be.
Peace. ✌🏻
